Making space come to life

As artistic as we strive to be with our designs, we are taught in design school that “form follows function”. This means that before a space can be made one of wondrous beauty, it must first and foremost be made easy to use.

This was especially true when it came to this space created for two Astrophysicists. As two individuals who were seeking the guidance of a professional to make their open floor plan look fantastic, they aimed for a space that served them well with an inclination to learn how everything works.

By pulling the architectural lines from the existing walls and mapping out the circulation zone, the spatial ergonomics took shape. After doing so, we established that an island would be rather difficult to place, and opted for a deeper, 36” preparation zone. This allowed our clients to have an additional 12″ of depth at the back of the counter, with upper cabinets that were made deeper for easy access and additional storage.

The design was decided upon, using neutral-colored cabinets that would allow us to use other pops of color elsewhere. With a skylight that bathed the central space with light, we opted for bold black accents, which represented the vastness of space. Touches of icy blue resembled the sky, and made the space truly come to life.
